This series is sort of a public learning engagement. In fact, I think I am far too ignorant about Nigeria’s history. I am reading about Nigeria to enable me to ask the right or appropriate questions. Yes. I want to be able to ask more appropriate questions by the end of this series. We find more effective solutions by asking the right questions.
Follow-up on the series: Reading Nigeria 5
Dear Fellow,
I am vexed by the fact that I wrote a lengthy script and lost everything at the point of edit.
I am torn between rewriting the piece again and not doing so.
Other than allowing this update to slip by, I decided to just put in singular points all that the initial piece covered.
What you have before you is the result.
However, I am not happy about the loss.
But we move.
In commemoration of Independence Day, I published a review of What Britain Did to Nigeria: A Short History of Conquest and Rule by Max Siollun. Read the review:
I am picking up a new book in the continuation of this series. This time around it is a biography of J. D. Gomwalk, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s history. I don’t like the fact that I explained the reason for choosing this book other than a book on the nation’s history in the initial piece—and may have to do so again. Well, it is simply that individuals also contribute immensely to nation-building. I want to know what his contributions were especially to my state of origin, Plateau state.
“I believe that Nigeria is a nation favoured by Providence” _Chinua Achebe.
Out of sheer patriotism and benevolence, Professor Dul Johnson offered us a collection of essays in view of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria. The booklet is titled The People and Governance. Professor Johnson writes
“It is better to VOTE and create a burden of conscience to whoever will temper your votes than to abstain and give an automatic discounting of your votes” (pg. 39).
I look forward to reading your contributions to this series. I look forward to writing to you next week Monday, God willing.
I remain your LetterMan:
